  • 75%的美国人希望降低加工食品和餐厅食品的钠含量;
  • 58%的美国人已经开始尝试减钠;

  • 与有创新性的小型的电子科技企业合作开发可以阅读和解释营养成分表的OCR程序;

Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes new AHA and CDC sodium resources and a funding opportunity for small businesses.

New AHA Infographic Highlights Consumer Research

Recently, the American Heart Association published an infographic with select consumer research findings. The findings indicate –

  • 75% of Americans want less sodium in processed and restaurant food.
  • 58% of Americans have tried to reduce sodium in their diet.
  • 97% of Americans do not know, or underestimate, their sodium intake.

CDC published similar findings in 2014 indicating that U.S. consumers are generally supportive of government actions to reduce sodium in restaurant and school meals, and manufactured food. CDC data are summarized here: http://www.cdc.gov/salt/pdfs/kab_highlights.pdf. Small Business Innovation Research Program to Fund App on Optical Nutrition Facts Scanning
The Small Business Innovation Research Program is looking to fund $150,000 over six months for creation of a mobile application. The application will use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read Nutrition Facts Panel’s (NFPs) directly from photos of labels taken with a smart phone. The project will involve –

  • Collaboration with innovative tech-industry small business to create OCR technology to read and interpret NFPs.
  • Testing the accuracy and validity of the mobile application to ensure the ability to successfully read and interpret NFPs into information that will add value to other mobile applications, and ultimately consumers.

The application process closes on November 5, 2014 at 4:30 PM Eastern Time. Only paper submissions will be accepted.

The applicant solicitation for “Optical Character Recognition Software for Scanning Nutrition Facts Panel” is published as Topic 37 and may be found on page 103, here: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/SBIRContract/PHS2015-1.pdf.

Thank you for your continued engagement in sodium reduction.

Regards,

Jessica
