Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes findings from a new survey.

Survey Finds Unhealthful Food Items Frequently at Check Out
Recently, the Center for Science in the Public Interest released a survey on retail stores’ promotion of candy, soda, and other unhealthful foods at checkout. The study, “Sugar Overload: Retail Checkout Promotes Obesity,” found that many chain stores—including supermarkets, drug stores, hardware and toy stores—promote foods high in sugar and salt at and near check out aisles. The survey assessed the prevalence of foods and beverages at 30 different kinds of stores and compared stores where people traditionally shop for food with those that are not primarily food stores. Results found that 90% of checkout food options were considered unhealthful in all 30 stores combined; healthful foods in this survey were defined as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, and unhealthful foods as candy, energy bars, chips, cookies/cakes, dried meat, and hot food (i.e. pizza, hot dogs, and chicken wings). Study authors recommend that non-food stores stop selling food and drinks at checkout and that food stores adopt nutrition standards for foods sold at checkout.
