Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes the American Heart Association’s statement on salt sensitivity of blood pressure and a review of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

AHA Scientific Statement: Salt Sensitivity of Blood Pressure

The American Heart Association released a Scientific Statement on Salt Sensitivity of Blood Pressure (SSBP).  The statement includes the historical perspective of SSBP and development in animal models, management of SSBP in humans, including the variability, reproducibility, assessment, and treatment options, and implications of SSBP for public health.  Highlights from the statement include:

  • SSBP is a physiological trait by which the blood pressure (BP) of some members of the population exhibits changes parallel to changes in salt intake.
  • Factors that may influence the BP response to salt intake include sex, age, adiposity, race-ethnicity, and clinical conditions such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
  • This statement reviews the role of SSBP, including its physiology, prognostic significance, measurement, and implications for the management of individual patients and the public.
