Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes a new sodium-reduction campaign and a new Scientific American publication related to global cardiovascular disease and sodium reduction.

New AHA Consumer Sodium Reduction Campaign
According to new American Heart Association (AHA) consumer survey research, nearly 97% of 1,000 people surveyed either underestimated or could not estimate how much sodium they eat daily, with many survey respondents underestimating their intake by approximately 1,000 milligrams. To raise awareness of Americans’ excess sodium intakes and the impact on health, AHA recently launched a new consumer sodium reduction campaign entitled, “I love you salt, but you’re breaking my heart.”  The campaign encourages people to take a pledge to reduce the sodium they eat, features a blog, quiz, and infographics, and provides links to lower-sodium recipes and educational articles on the website. The website also features a 1-minute video, “Don’t Let Salt Sneak Up On You” with the feature character, “Sneaky Salt.”

Promoting Cardiovascular Health Worldwide
Scientific American recently published a special issue entitled, “Promoting Cardiovascular Health Worldwide,” focused on recommendations from the U.S. Institute of Medicine on reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease and related noncommunicable diseases across the globe, including in low-and middle-income countries. One article included in the special issue, “How Policy Makers Can Advance Cardiovascular Health” specifically focuses on hypertension control and sodium reduction globally, and what can be done toward improvement.

Thank you for your continued engagement in sodium reduction.

Regards,

Jessica
