FDA Proposes Changes to Nutrition Facts Label

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed updates to the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods. Among other things, the proposed updates would –

  • Reduce the Daily Value for sodium, from 2,400 mg to 2,300 mg.
  • Update serving size requirements to reflect amounts currently eaten.
  • Require that potassium be included on the food label.

FDA is accepting electronic and written comments on the proposed rule by June 2, 2014. Comments may be submitted electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal at http://www.regulations.gov. More information may be found here: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm387418.htm.
